Alternative/renewables are still a ways off. Most of these companies who have tried to compete with oil and gas have gone by the wayside, due to a combination of lack of funding, lack of cost competitiveness with oil/gas, and lack of proof of concept. It's a catch-22 when it comes to competing with fossil fuels. The low current cost of fossil fuels is a detriment to these new technologies. Alternative/renewables need major government funding to compete with low oil and gas prices, and that help has been washed away to a large degree. And private financiers are fearful of unproven new technologies because of it.

Alternative/renewables are coming, no doubt. But their progress will continue to be very slow if prices of oil and gas stay down.
