Aha! An answer to my "life test" question, but not really:

Most drugs break down, or deteriorate, over time. Brand-name and generic drug companies must do months-long "stability tests" to show that their versions last for a reasonable time. FDA reviews the results of these studies.

You can't prove a 4 yr shelf life in months unless you can create conditions that compress reactions that take years to occur into months.
