Look at it this way. And I’m not saying this in an attempt to convince you about rap or hip-hop music. But it might allow you to understand what it’s all about.

Rapping is about turning nothing into something.

Many of the artists that you felt tortured by are probably derivatives of an art form that originated from a struggle that you’ll probably never understand unless you actually experienced it yourself...

To understand it is to develop an awareness of where it comes from. The creators of rap music were not given the opportunities to learn how to play an instrument and may not have been blessed with innate musical talents. In fact, they probably couldn’t even afford an instrument to begin with. With limited options immediately available to them, they still managed to create a sound that morphed into the world’s most popular genre of music. A popularity that created a demand, and thus an economic opportunity to prosper beyond the systemic threshold designed to keep them below the poverty line.

So, yes—more power to them. It was never supposed to be technical in nature or based on talent. It was always about overcoming life’s obstacles using the bare minimum and surpassing all expectations.

Chances are you probably won't see those names in big media.

How many distinct rap artists are currently in existence who claim to be professional? By professional I mean they have no shame in asking for money for their live performance or recorded version. My best SWAG is there are probably tens of thousands.

Why? For the reasons you supplied. Like any musical genre some rap performers can create meaningful products.

Most of them, I would imagine, can't play a musical instrument with any degree of proficiency, if at all. They've never taken formal music lessons. They can't even read a simple lead sheet.

But, digital keyboards are equipped with all kinds of add on features. The features can produce all kinds of add on sounds. Makes it easy to be a "recording artist."

What truly professional artists, regardless of genre, make look easy actually takes a considerably long time to perfect.
