Agreed, but as for "the religious" satisfying short term needs, you couldn't be more wrong IMO. It's all about the long term prize, as opposed to the need for instant fulfillment. If that were the case "the religious" would be taking the easy path by doing whatever they pleased and condoning it using their own moral justifications as most people do.
BTW...I think the apt term for the goings on here is Confirmation Bias.
