Maybe.

Falconer, Your thoughts on A2-73 treating diabetes?

I know of no studies on this, but it’s something that should be tested (Anavex may have already done this in rats with induced diabetes).

How might Anavex 2-73 treat or prevent diabetes? Of course, there are two divergent forms of diabetes, Type I, and Type II.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. The body attacks the pancreas with antibodies. The damaged pancreas can’t make insulin.

In Type II diabetes the pancreas produces some insulin, but insufficient amounts.

Could Anavex 2-73 correct the autoimmunity of Type I diabetes? Could the drug chemically prompt the adequate production of insulin. The simplest mechanism (details presently unknown) would be for the drug to cause the immune system to work normally; not attack body tissues. In Type II diabetes, the drug would restore normalized insulin production.

For both, easily said and hoped for. But all of this needs to be tested in rats. It’s not a blank shot in the dark. The drug’s generalized ability to restore homeostatic processes and biochemical cascades within both cells and tissues may be corrective for both forms of diabetes. We must await for animal tests.
