Chemist - yes they are pretty easy to differentiate.

Canker sores are on the oral mucosa (gums, inside cheeks, tongue etc). There are often multiple ones

Cold sores (HSV) are almost always on the lip area and usually multiple small ulcers forming a larger one. May be fluid filled initially.
