Surely is how you learn. I had to learn the hard way several times in the past.

I mainly stick to big board stocks and ETFs these days.

I dabble with pennies and never ever again will hold one long or put a lot of money into one. I merely look for ones that have taken a beating and on speculation only try to buy at or near a bottom for a quick flip. Nothing more. Nothing less.
