You're right- it could have some bearing on our low rankings but still- places like India and China specifically- hard packaging is just not feasible for such large populations making plastic everything(s) much more attractive/convenient and most importantly, cheaper.

I remember a few years ago when I was in Haiti. You could look just off shore for about 100-200 yards out- and it was just this floating trash pile for miles along the coastline and lots of it was plastic containers. Because the H2O was so bad (like Mexico), everyone (including locals) were issued or bought H2O in little one pint pouches-- made of................................................wait for it.........................................plastic.:-\

I also 'member a few years back when there was a huge outcry here in Michigan because WM (Waste Management) was importing all of Toronto's trash and dumping it here in Michigan. It now appears that Canadian trash is again being dumped in Michigan (Canadian trash again filling Michigan landfills)

Instead of looking for places to dump crap- we should be making recycle more than just a word imo.
