Shelf life? A Si3N4 implant would continue to slowly corrode into the body. This does pose a potential problem if the patient suffers from liver damage and has trouble regulating ammonia levels. However its ability to kill bacteria including MRSA is highly beneficial while the body heals.

As far as ive seen, Si3 portion turns into SiO4 not SiO2 in an aqueous enviornment. SiO4 is more biocompatible than SiO2 from what ive seen.
