You said that your uncle was former CIA/military, and my dad was also, on the aerospace/engineering end, so small world :o) Actually there wouldn't be much of US economy without the hundreds of contractors and thousands of sub-contractors dealing with the Military/Industrial/Security Complex..
I was considering Geology as a career path back in high school, also Forestry. Kind of nerdy, but Earth sciences are very interesting. One of my nephews has a degree in meteorology, the other in biomedical engineering. Climate science is obviously heavily biased these days. Science needs to be objective, but is often spun by many other factors.
