If shares of a pink are available to short, they can be shorted whether one owns restricted stock, or not.

The difference is that if one owns an equal amount of restricted stock, one never needs to buy back the shorted shares! One can just deliver the shares to cover when they come off restriction!

This is the standard M.O. during death spirals...
