So how does the EC distinguish between good bacteria and "Pathogens"?

They have invented a bacterial version of Maxwell's Demon.

It asks each bacteria as it goes by if it is a good guy or a bad guy. If it answers it's a good guy then it gets a pass. If it answers it's a bad guy it gets shunted off to the electro death chamber.

The demon is trained to spot lying bacteria. If it suspects the bacteria is lying, off it goes. It's a tough world in the electrocoagulator.
