#13675 RE: sgolds #13672

sgolds, Which means that HPQ will tell Intel to take a hike if they suggest they shouldn't be using AMD.

No, and that was precisely my point. They can't do this. AMD does not make enough processors to supply HP. Also, their range is not yet fully competitive. We need the low-power mobile A64 stuff.

Many reasons, but ultimately it comes down to no need to introduce the computer now without a proper OS, and AMD may not be ramped enough until then. November they can catch the holiday season. It is sufficient for Tuesday that HPQ makes their intentions official.

Again, this doesn't make sense to me. By your reasoning, there is no need to introduce the product until 1Q 2004, when Windows AMD64 is launched. It is better than nothing that they declare intentions on Tuesday, but you can bet AMD was offering every incentive they could for HP to be there with actual machines shipping on that day. So why didn't HP accept? Intel, of course. They want HP to be offering P4 Emergency Editions at the same time, if not before, that HP offers A64s.

The ramp idea might make more sense, but I'm still doubtful.
