The usual treatment, initially anyway, is a barrage of antibiotics that beat the hell out of your system (and hopefully the infection). The antibiotics are selected after they know what the germ is that afflicts the patient. I my case, the first time was strep (easier to cure, easier not easy) and the second time it was staph (way more dangerous and difficult to eradicate). Surgery is usually not the first option.

How do people contract infective endocarditis? The infection can be caused by bacteria introduced into the blood stream, usually through normal activity such as tooth brushing which causes minor injury to the lining of the mouth or gums. These bacteria can lodge on heart valves and cause infection of the endocardium.
