The usual treatment, initially anyway, is a barrage of antibiotics that beat the hell out of your system (and hopefully the infection). The antibiotics are selected after they know what the germ is that afflicts the patient. I my case, the first time was strep (easier to cure, easier not easy) and the second time it was staph (way more dangerous and difficult to eradicate). Surgery is usually not the first option.
