Allow me to axe you a more fundamental query:

WHY should anyone make the plural of leaf to be spelt 'leaves' instead of the more compact and straightforward addition of an 's' to make it 'leafs'?

This has the added advantage of adding meaning, by distinguishing a plurality of botanical structures from the verb meaning to exit.

Maybe the original artist eons ago lost in antiquity was too lazy to draw more than one leaf?
