I think you are missing two big points.

The AD trial size is 450 people and a relatively short period of time.

There was a considerable discussion of trials size with the historical trial size being discussed as 3000 subjects. Older trials were considerably longer IIRC.

So, yes, there were considerable benefits from the delay from my point of view.
