So - on this theory, Google would tie up a quarter billion dollars for what reason? Not, surely, for a good chance of making a couple hundred bucks. What would Google’s rationale be for using their deep pockets so recklessly when they explained it to their shareholders?

Google has more to gain from MAXD finding business success than from MAXD failing.

It looks like you don't understand what MAXD's business model purports to be.

Someone would have to have really deep pockets and a lot to loose by MAXD becoming a successful company. Someone like google.
