Unfortunately, this isn't happening anywhere else that I know about. North Sea fields are diminishing rapidly. Mexico is about to lose its superfield. Ghawar brings up enormous quantities of the saltwater they have to use in order to keep the oil moving. I think I would apply Occam's razor on this one and assume that the original geologists screwed up in assessing the site.
