Sythetic allografts are expensive costing thousands of dollars, not even sure why it would be considered.

Another disadvantage to synthetics is they are slow to fuse. Cost plus performance are not competitive to Si3N4.

According to this smoker HA/TCP coatings are only good for stimulating fusion for thr forst 3 months, after which activity seems to stop.

The ceramic coating also stimulated intramedullary bone formation at the middle and distal levels of the implants. Fluorescent bone labeling indicated that new bone formation occurred primarily during the first 3 months after implantation, with comparatively little activity detected in the latter stages of the study.
