It is a very difficult dilemma of determining drug safety weighed against the tragic daily toll to a disease like Alzheimer's. My belief on the matter is that proper safety data coupled with close patient monitoring should allow drug application in a disease which carries a death sentence. I believe we are seeing this demonstrated in a more aggressive approach to cancer. Commissioner Gottlieb is a cancer survivor and you can see his active approach with the Cancer Center of Excellence within the FDA. Sorry to hear the sad news about losing a family member to AD. Let us hope that AVXL is successful with a drug for AD and other CNS related diseases.
You may want to research about coconut oil/ MCT oil (may be you already have) and its benefits to the brain. Dr. Mary Newport (on you tube) has detailed her husband's case and how it improved his cognitive health when he was suffering with AD. It should help people suffering from dementia too and importantly buy some time till AVXL (hopefully) can have a drug.
