Why do shares need to be on the ask for it to be retail? I can bid dump at any moment if I wanted to with no sign of it coming.

Agree with your assessment. Without buying pressure from retail, they will be able to drive this down as far as they would like. To stop that requires new buyers, and we are not going to find them while we are in a free fall.
