Hard numbers are hard to find, but a Pew Charitable Trusts investigation found plenty of evidence that marijuana addiction -- irresistible cravings despite wanting to stop -- exists and is on the rise. At one rehabilitation clinic, the number of patients seeking help for marijuana addiction has doubled in the last 2 years alone.
While the rate of marijuana addiction is low -- around 10% of users, at most -- as the second most-abused mind-altering substance, the raw numbers of people who are affected are still significant.
Part of the reason: the strength of the drug. In years past, marijuana was only 2% to 4% THC. Nowadays, with legalization in some states, those levels can reach up to 30%. Concentrates and extracts can go over 80%.
