Liquidmetal Technologies has several trademark registrations for "LIQUIDMETAL." However, they are generally narrow in scope because the mark "LIQUIDMETAL" is comprised of two common words. Trademarks, unlike patents, normally don't give you exclusive rights to a mark unless you create the mark. For example, "EXXON" and "XEROX" are made up words so they get the maximum amount of protection.

None of LQMT's marks are for goods and services in paint. So, the other company is free to try to obtain a trademark in that field of use.
