So to put it another way so you can maybe understand my point the oral bioavailability (the API that gets into the bloodstream and is active) of these drugs is generally poor, since they are poorly absorbed and easily degraded by proteolytic enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract.

So while the patient I cared for has that spike in pain, even though he/she pops another prodrug pill or uses the old pill cutter to give a half more of that dose the amount of opioid available due to enzymes and gastric juices is diminished. The efficiency of that formulation BLOWS.

So, how do all oral drugs work? if they all are degraded in the stomach by the gastric juices and enzymes?

Oh I believe it has to do with the excipients and coatings of the tablets... which protect the API and controls its release... but anyway I know nothing about pharma :)
