GPU miners are yesterday's news - the difficulty and hashrate has made the GPU mining obsolete.

I'm not sure where you heard that, but a friend is now mining with a whole bank of 1080 Ti's. His payoff time, per card, since he purchased them back when prices hadn't skyrocketed, was a mere 4-8 months. GPU mining is going strong.
