All you had to do was to call the bank who issued the card and tell them to stop making payments to them.

Health Clubs are notorious for that.

It's still a better idea to put a health club membership on a credit card rather than paying it in full though.

With the credit card, you can dispute the charge and not have to pay it. If you pay your membership in full and the club goes out of business, most times you lose the money.
