The best explanation I found is from the movie "Too Big to Fail"
It's a good movie, but this section explicitly explains that AIG was the insurance company to most of the Credit Default Swaps throughout the world. So if AIG failed all other banks throughout the world would fail. Therefore, AIG was "Too Big To Fail"!!
Wamu was not a systemic global threat to the economy so the government let it fail.
