I don't think this is an issue Trump really cares about. I don't think his closest advisers do either. For Sessions, though, it's been a decades-long crusade.
Since Trump's already not happy with him, it's hard to see why he chose to do this now. Unless it's some form of payback. Or unless he thinks he won't be AG much longer, and wanted to offer it as his parting shot.
