The S&P 500 looks to be three for three for 2018 records The U.S. stock market hasn't just started 2018 off on a good footing, it has started it with what is by one standard the best out-of-the-gate performance in more than 50 years. The S&P 500 is up 0.4% on Thursday, and if it closes in positive territory, that will mean it has not only risen in each of the three trading sessions of 2018 thus far, but that it has closed at a record in each of them. The last time the benchmark index opened the year with three straight records was in 1964, when it achieved the feat in the first six sessions of the year. The Nasdaq Composite Index is also on pace for its third straight record of the new year. The last time the Nasdaq has accomplished this feat was in 1999, when, like the S&P , it hit records in the first six trading days of the year. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average is also set for its third straight daily advance, it didn't end at a record on Tuesday, the first trading day of the year. It did end at a record on Wednesday, however, and it is poised to do so again on Thursday. It also topped 25,000 for the first time on Thursday. Read:Dow 25K! Here's what it says about the stock market (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/dow-25k-heres-what-it-says-about-the-stock-market-2018-01-04) Last year, the Dow made history by closing at a record in 71 sessions (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-dow-is-about-to-set-a-record-for-setting-records-2017-12-18), an achievement that was itself a record. Among the other notable records the S&P has hit recently, it is coming off 14 straight positive months on a total-return basis, an unprecedented streak (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/these-are-all-the-records-stock-indexes-are-poised-to-hit-as-december-comes-to-a-close-2017-12-29), and it could go a record stretch without a decline of 5%, a pullback that is historically quite common (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/heres-another-milestone-the-sp-500-could-surpass-this-month-2018-01-03). Volatility in the index has also been at multidecade lows (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-last-time-stocks-were-this-quiet-was-the-year-the-beatles-went-on-ed-sullivan-2017-12-14).
