Sigma-1 Receptors Should Persist

Do the sigma 1 receptors diminish with age?

The mammalian s1 receptor is an integral membrane protein in several tissues, particularly in nerves. As such, I can’t see that it would “diminish” (lose structure or function) with age. If it did, the cell in which that protein resided would fail to function.

As both in vitro (cells in labware) and in vivo (in living animal) studies show, sigma-1 receptors persist, at all ages, open for bonding with sigma-1 receptor agonists.

We old guys can be successfully treated with Anavex sigma-1 receptor agonists, too. Our receptor proteins are willing and waiting.
