I fully anticipated the glass-gate.

What I did not anticipated is the whopping $549 replacement cost (compare to Samsung $20)

You crack the glass, you have to pay for new camera also.

Don’t worry. Apple says just buy a case. This is exactly what they did last year with the piano black phone that scratches in nano second.
