Off-book transactions might not be reported on Nasdaq.
There are several types which don’t show up as a market price transaction.
1) transfers to a retirement account. I.E. Roth IRA
2) gifts to children
3) transfers to trusts

There are a few more which show up in the volume reported by the company, but they are not open market buy/sell transactions.

When you start to see a lot of these ( by volume) it usually means something is about to transpire.
In otherwords, it might be tax advantaged to do the transfers in advance of some anticipated developments.
Some would call them insider transactions.

I do track the disparity between broker volume and Nasdaq volume . In the last week this disparity has spiked for APDN.
I also think contract PRs are being held back. For example, do you believe there were no Videojet contracts that came out of the Las Vegas Show? I doubt it.
Call me paranoid

Nice question GT, on NASDAQ volume not matching total volume, and before SABBY sold off back in June, it rarely came close. Those with the power made the money back then, AND, SSDD (you know that one). Today's headline (cough, cough) was typical of Second Quarter trade days

Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NAS:APDN) Float Percentage Of Total Shares Outstanding: 84.99% (As of Today) From GuruFocus page <and the link>

Here's our top 4 Institutional Holders and latest transactions (Van Guard Index Fund being a mutual fund with some differentiation in registering SHORT TERM BORROWs over on DTCC).

Aww shit, can't get HEADER row to align even close.
On following columns, First column is institution or fund, second is registered holdings, 3d pct of total inst. holdings forth is size of most recent transactions, fifth is change of holding (+ or minus). Last column is transaction date.

Oh yeah, ignore the asterisks, had some minor insights on the entity and I forget what I was going to SPOUT, I mean comment on. We talked about Sabby's switch over to APDNW in the early summer. Blackrock, ahhh, nuthin, I take out the asterisks and hose up my table.

**Sabby Capital LLC 987,593 3.61% -784,246 1.11% 06/30/17
Vanguard Group, Inc. 563,743 2.06% +106,692 0.00% 09/30/17
Vanguard Index Fund 397,507 1.45% +62,855 0.00% 09/30/17
**BlackRock Fund Adv 214,693 0.78% +2,555 0.00% 06/30/17

Two entities of Vanguard group made some end of FY moves into us. ANY other moves since reported on 13Fs and their not required to be filed till after end of our 1st quarter, 31 Dec. Makes it hard to track. My thought is an INSTITUTION or several holding us in check right now.

Here's some more from that GuruFocus page for shits and grins.
