Could be that he just wanted to get a few million out of China and wanted something to play with during his retirement.

Highly unlikely for two reasons.
1) If he tries selling any of his shares before LQMT is fiscally sound, his investment turns to zero. In other words, he will no longer have a few million out of China.
2) Once LQMT achieves some benchmarks, Li has pledged to turn his LQMT shares over to Eontec.
