All the streets run north and south and the avenues run east to west.

For the people who have never been to NYC if I'm on 4th st and want to go to 52nd street I go north since that is the way the streets are numbered.

If I'm on 11th Ave and want to go to 1st Ave I head east since that is the way the Avenues are named and or numbered.

I suspect you'd get lost in the Battery.
