Historically, the old Allied company which was bought out by Hitachi was the biggest supplier of ribbon (METGLAS) for the winding into transformer cores. Another use is for RFID in numerous applications. Indeed, ribbon has been around for a long time and was the first commercial success of a bulk metallic glass or amorphous metal. Of course, all of the original patents have expired and virtually anyone can make ribbon.
