Yeah ACARS is/was too sophistimacated for us GA pilots. We had to "decode" our own downloaded METARs, call up Flight Service for a briefing, or, the "local" tower and ask if they can tell us what their radar is painting if we see weather in our flight path. Of course now, the GPS systems almost always have real-time weather uplinking capability.
