I emailed Tesla about this several months ago, but didn't get a reply. Now that we know Tesla is involved with BMG, it seems somewhat more plausible that the product is named after the metal lettering on the visor.

Just coincidence unfortunately. If you search EBAY for "liquidmetal hat" you will find many with that shiny silver lettering.
