You have to get them back to a broker to sell them. There is a waiting period once they are turned back in, kind of like waiting for a personal check to clear.

i know with Scottrade, you deposit them like you do cash. they show up the next trading day in your account.

problem is, when you order a certificate, it can take 4 weeks or more to get it.

a transfer like i mentioned can take 10 - 20 working days.
