I believe the justification for appeL by the defense was that a new lawyer was involved? Isn't it possible if they didn't grant the extensions that it could be used later as an appeal that defendant wasn't treated fairly. Personally I do not care I am just playing devil's advocate. Also judges really do not care how long cases like this drag on. Whatever delays pushes toward a settlement is fine with them.
