Uber, Lyft etc do not exhibit an profitable business plan today. There's no question in my mind that they are strictly getting in position for autonomous vehicles.
If you ever visit Pittsburgh grab an Uber, and you'll find a person sitting in the driver seat with a pen and a pad taking notes. He doesn't touch the wheel or brake but documents the performance and the customers response.
