don't the mm companies make money if they have a large inventory that they bought up at a low price and the stock surges

MM's don't keep much, if any, inventory, due to Net Capital Requirements which are computed daily.

Go to the SEC or FINRA websites and learn the basics, and laws and regulations, about Market Makers.

What you describe would be insanely risky. And that's one reason they don't do it.
