It's possible the power adapter has died.
Although if plugged into the wall all this time, the battery should have been charged.

Try unplugging everything and reboot. And if it says low battery and shuts down, then perhaps not using the battery and cycling it through usage 'could' weaken the battery itself.

I've also heard of weirdness where the battery actually reverses polarity from disuse and the computer is protecting itself.

I've run into that problem at work when a battery is used beyond the charge life and then fails to recharge and upon checking, the voltages are reversed. I don't think I've been able to save a battery in this condition.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all the suggestions to remedy my problem. Nothing worked so today took it into our little repair shop. The problem was power adapter cord was shot (the cord to computer). So, purchased a universal AC power adapter/charger which came with a bag of adapters for every laptop in existence! Was the least cost of all the possible fixes. Wife is happy with her computer again.
