I would imagine the tactic would be to straddle the spread with a bias toward the direction of momentum, no? If it's going up, I always try for a couple of ticks below the ask. If I don't get filled, then I'll try jumping out in front of it ever so slightly. I'm certain there's a better way of doing it.
Being not quite a newbie but by no means a seasoned investor, these technicalities have caused me to leave plenty of money on the table in the past, I'm sure.
