I think most would assume no maintenance because well... there isn't any.
Any problems are covered by warranty's, inverter is covered by its own warranty, panels are covered by their own warrant...so what maintenance is the owner responsible for again? Oh, you must mean the "if it doesn't rain, you need to hose them down after several months of dust accumulation"...

I take full responsibility for that maintenance. Although sometimes I sub it out to my kids, they love playing with the hose, although sometimes I regret is because they get me with it.

That is assuming they never require maintenance, which the owner is fully responsible for on his/her own.

Rinse them off..... A little water..

At current electric prices, and with the increase of fossil fuel production will possibly go lower is there really that much savings.

Like the coal companies. Drive the prices down. No profits, or losses. They go bankrupt.
They can only afford to raise prices.
They raise prices. We are cheaper.
They lower prices. They go bankrupt.
Win-win for us.

Cost plus interest plus maintenance plus still needing to be hook up to some type of back up power is it really worth it today to go solar?

Yes. Long run solar is cheaper. After the payback period. And there IS one. Power is free....
Yes, the payback is better where power rates are high..
Bigger systems are cheaper per watt than small systems...
Average energy cost per person in my state is $2,000+ per person/year.
With the right house and the right car you should be able to power your whole life with solar.
