It was an emotionally powerful ad. In that era, there was pushback by the extreme conservatives, but the consensus view favored measures to clean up the environment and keep it clean.

I do, powerful message and alot has been done but,...
Human animals for all their self perceived exceptionalism will still have to answer to their God (only concept that was ever effective controlling the masses) GAIA. Finite planet in the words of the Club of Rome 1972 or Rachel Carson 1962. The same science that has brought us so far and so much confirms the atmosphere is the limit. Our species is quite capable of many foible like putting the planet off its orbit where we burn out into the sun or freeze in inhabitable space. Disrupt the very unique circumstance that keeps us alive whether the food chain, oxygen level/lungs of the earth, sun screen/ozone, etc,.. . For those that think nothing bad can ever happen or that WE will collectively come up with some technological fix to pay off the toxic death spiral are like the penny dreamers. We know this. But, like the corporation; we can’t think too far beyond the next quarter. Over stimulated, over burdened – stupid human, the long term planning that would be req’d is and has always been beyond the individual and collective’s grasp in the industrial age for the most part. There is hope – three things. Crisis, revolution in consciousness or greed/profit. Human’s have done pretty well in a crisis. The single biggest example was the world wide response to the tsunami in asia but there were many others unfortunately like 911. Revolutions like the French, sexual/racial in the west, green in agriculture, stuff happens – maybe even a deep ecology. Greed/profit – like I like to quote myself: if saving the planet and our species isn’t done by being profitable/appealing to greed we is f’ed!. (If things get really bad I think we can still bunker bust the super rich in their island enclaves with a MOAB so no hedging ;). We know this. But, we can’t commit – no ecowill.
