I am not about to concern myself with what you deem as "common sense".
I will concern myself with the facts. And the facts are that with age the yield of mulberry trees drops.
Large trees are not functional for silkworm farming.

Stumping seems to be the best choice but short trees with no more than 4 crowns are what most traditional farms use.

The shoots produce the leaves. Shoots are around 5 feet long and the leaves tend to pop out of the shoots all at once.
The younger the leaves the more nutrition they have.
So there is a happy medium between 9 and 13 week harvest 3 to 4 times a year.

Older trees (over 5 years I believe) begin to diminish. They are removed and replaced with clones when they slow production.

"Common sense" says that facts are right and you are not.
