The sell volume shows what was bought on the bid, and the buy volume, what was bought on the ask.


So, heavy sell volume eats up the bid eventually dropping it, and heavy buy volume eats up the ask eventually raising it.

Look to the right of this message at the chart. You can see the big red bars showing heavy sell volume, and a drop in the bid/ask.


This is why traders watch level 2s. It shows how much is on the bid and ask.
