"WCDMA is widely accepted as a natural, technically logical and easier standard for GSM to progress into 3G."
There is no progression path from GSM to WCDMA. WCDMA is a form of CODE DIVISION whereas GSM is a form of TIME DIVISION.
CDMA2000 was developed by the US firm Qualcomm Inc.
WCDMA uses the same IPR to hand off, power control and rake recieve as CDMA2000 or IS95, therefore also is invented by "US firm Qualcomm Inc."
Some 95.5 per cent of China's 230 million subscribers use GSM and the WCDMA, making it the natural 3G choice for China, Conway said.
There is no progression from GSM to WCDMA... those 95.5 per cent of 230 million will still have to buy new handsets no matter what form of CDMA they use. However if the service providers used IS95 or IS98 they could easily software modify their basestations (and protect their investments) by migrating into IS2000
Interestingly enough, the "European-based WCDMA" is spectrally inefficient when compared to CDMA2000, therefore it is not "technically logical" to use.
