Years ago during the pre NASDAQ era, there where actual listings of otc stocks printed daily to assist professional traders so that they would have in a concise format a compilation of securities not listed on any national or regional market. These "pink sheets" as they were called, showed the individual market makers current price that each was quoting for a given security, as well as their phone number to their trading department. Since they were printed on long pink sheets, these paper lists of otc stocks became known as the "pink sheets".

Unlike listed securities that trade on an organized exchange in an auction market seting, the unlisted, or otc market as it is called, is an negotiated one comprised of broker dealers across our country, making individual markets, by maintaining positions in the stocks of their interest.
